Edward Sheeran Biography
Edward Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire to Irish and English parents. His father is an art educator, and his mother also has a creative background and now runs an online jewellery shop in Suffolk. Edward Sheeran was moved to Suffolk and at a very young age began learning to play guitar. A big musical influence for Ed came when he got the opportunity to meet Damien Rice after watching him at an intimate gig in Ireland. Edward then began writing his first song the very next day. At just 14 Ed was becoming more dedicated to writing and recording music, later adding beat boxing and the loop pedal to his music repertoire. At 16 years old Edward Sheeran moved to London to gain more experience playing gigs. In 2009 Ed set himself a challenge to beat James Morrison’s 200 gigs in a year. Not only did Ed smash that target, he reached a total of 312 gigs that year, selling CD’s from his ruck sack and sleeping on friends sofas to get afford to get by with the expenses of London.
In February 2010 mainstream rapper Example spotted a video of Ed through SB.TV, which had received a lot of hype, and asked him to come on tour with him. After the tour Ed then bought a plane ticket to Los Angeles in April 2010 with no booked gigs or contacts whilst out there. He played as many open mic nights as he could, and one night at ‘The Foxxhole’ he was spotted by Hollywood’s A-List actor and owner of the venue Jamie Foxx. Jamie saw Ed’s potential and let him stay at his house and use his recording studio for the rest of his stay in Los Angeles. On his return to the UK, Ed was spotted by other famous public figures such as footballer Rio Ferdinand and musician Elton John. He is now signed to Atlantic Records, but is also a part of Rocketmusic, a company that works in artist management – which is co-founded by Elton John.
What fans love most about Edward is how he took an independent route to get where he is today, he didn’t ‘sell out’ or mould himself into something record labels wanted him to be. Ed has inspired other musicians to realise that with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, you can make a name for yourself the old fashioned way: through a whole lot of gigging! Ed still sleeps on friends sofas, but now his gigs take him all over the world, and each day Ed is growing a bigger fan base. Ed’s latest album ‘+’ has recently gone triple platinum, containing autobiographical songs mainly written around the breakup from his long term girlfriend when she ended their relationship after going to University. All his songs are completely open about his life, but written in a mature reflective way, something which shocked many critics due to Ed’s young age.
As Ed’s fans will know already, he is one of the kindest, most down-to-earth performers, and whilst he may now be mingling with celebrities, and entering new levels of notoriety, he is still the same person with the same friends and part of a close family unit. A typical Aquarius, Ed is original and inventive, as well as being honest and loyal. There is no doubt Ed will go on to be even more of a success than he already is, and he’s already rapidly gaining a loyal fan base all over the world.
After many years crashing on friends sofas, our lovely Mr Edward Sheeran has now bought himself a new flat in London. He releases his eagerly anticipated The Slumdon Bridge EP with Yelawolf in February 2012.
